Tackling Type 2
Diabetes in Tayside

NHS Tayside is committed to tackling the rising rates of Type 2 diabetes in our community. In the last 10 years, Type 2 diabetes has gone up by almost 50%, and 7% of adults are already living with the condition. It's estimated that 1 in 3 are at high risk of developing diabetes in future.

We understand that Type 2 diabetes can affect both the person living with it and their family, but it doesn't have to. Our goal is to help prevent issues before they start. That's why we're offering lifestyle programmes to help people prevent, manage and reverse Type 2 diabetes.

Who We Are

Our Team of Experts

We have a team of local experts working on this. They work in public health, diabetes, weight management, psychology and primary care. We receive funding from the Scottish Government.

Building a Healthier Future

NHS Tayside is taking big steps to help prevent and reverse Type 2 diabetes. We're following a plan from Scottish Government that focuses on helping people stay healthy for longer. You can read more about it here: 'Framework for the Prevention, Early Detection and Early Intervention of Type 2 Diabetes'.

What We're Doing

• We're making it easier for people to manage their weight. We have new and improved programmes for people with Type 2 diabetes, Prediabetes (when your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes), or who had diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes).

• We're working hard to find people who might have Prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes but don't know it yet. We want to help them get the care they need as early as possible.

Why This is Important

Type 2 diabetes affects many people in our community. It can cause serious health problems like heart disease, stroke and nerve damage to hands and feet. It's also expensive to treat.

By focusing on preventing diabetes, finding it early, and treating it quickly, we want to help people:

•  Get their blood sugar back to normal
•  Avoid health problems
•  Have a better quality of life
•  Get diagnosed sooner and to get them help earlier
